Church surprises young golf champion with custum clubs

Little Elm Praise Fellowship Worship Center congregants believe in supporting their young people whether that means giving help with homework or giving a set of custom-made golf clubs.
In August the church presented golf champion April McCoy a set of golf clubs to be customized just for her.
McCoy is a senior at Creekview High School in Carrollton and attends the Praise Fellowship Worship Center with her parents Darren and Toni.
On Aug. 22, during the church service, she thought Pastor Larry Dyer had called her to the front to say a few words about her walk with God and her beginning golf career. She was not expecting to receive a set of golf clubs to be customized for the way she plays the game.
She had already told her father, Darren, that she would rather have the new golf clubs than new clothes for school. Now she can have both.
The custom-made clubs must be working. Last weekend she won another golf tournament, the Bridlewoods golf tournament in Flower Mound by eight strokes. The tournament was for 16- to 18-year-old boys and girls.
Darren McCoy is understandably proud of his daughter.
“She is a great golf player through dedication and hard work,” he said. “My daughter would practice 10 to 12 hours a day in the summer. I knew she was going to be good, but not this good.”
McCoy is also her coach. When he played golf with his sons he took her with them. That's when she picked up the game.
“As a father she really surprised me,” he said.
The McCoy family has been attending the Praise Fellowship Worship Center for about a year and a half.
“April is inspired by Pastor Dyer's teachings. He teaches if you confess a thing and if you believe a thing you will receive it. She has trusted in that and built upon that in her career,” Darren McCoy said.
“Praise Fellowship has been there for her,” he added. “ It has really been a plus to her in the way the church has supported her and believed in her.”
April McCoy wants to major in a helping profession such as social work when she attends TCU next year.
