Your night to shine: choosing the right prom dress
Staff reports
Not many events happen every spring, year after year. But one special event happens every year in almost every high school throughout the country. And besides graduation and spring break, it’s one of the most memorable events in someone's life – prom. It’s time for prom and everyone is always looking for the perfect dress to make this night special. Prom creates lasting memories and is a red carpet night for most teens. Kay Unger recently made a personal appearance at Neiman Marcus Willow Bend and we asked her a few questions regarding prom dressing for spring 2010.
Plano Insider: Should girls select a long or short dress for prom?
Kay: It depends. Some schools will only allow girls to wear a long dress to prom. I personally think short is best for a junior prom and long is better for a senior prom. Wearing a long dress to prom is like a red carpet experience. It’s your event and your choice. Plus, it could be the last time you actually get to choose your own long dress. The next long dress you might wear could be a bridesmaid dress that you do not get to select. A short dress might be chosen because of the venue or band. It might give you more freedom if you wear a short dress. You might also have another opportunity to wear the short dress again in the future. If you choose a long dress, you can also have it cut off for another event later.
Kay: All blues are important. Any shade of blue. Turquoise, sky blue, royal blue, cobalt blue, every hue of blue is hot this spring. White is another major color this spring. Yellow is looking really great too.
Plano Insider: What style prom dress is in fashion this spring?
Kay: A one shoulder dress is still important. The detail on the dress is also something to look for. More than beads, its fabric manipulation. You will see flowers, big bows, pleats, folded fabric around the body on a lot of prom dresses this spring. A crisp dress is also very important. I have seen a lot of iridescent chiffon with a Grecian look. Just remember, very pretty and feminine dresses are key – the slinky look is not the look that is in.
Plano Insider: I hear you have a huge collection of shoes in your house. So, I am certain you love accessories. What should a teen look for to complete her prom look?
Kay: I do love shoes! Depending on your jewelry, you can wear a metallic shoe, preferably gold, with any prom dress this season. I think a girl should select a platform or a strappy heel. The newer look this season is a short heel, maybe a 2” kitten heel, that is a beautiful jeweled sandal or slide. Any shade of metallic is hot – there are so many shades. But if you wear a black dress to prom, you should wear a turquoise, coral or colored shoe.
I think for prom, its more about pretty earrings and fun rings – like cocktail rings. Pearls are looking great – they make the look elegant and feminine.
Wraps are also important accessories. The wraps this season are smaller shapes that are easy to wear and are more feminine. The fabric manipulation like our rose jacket is very in. No long stoles or wraps. A little tuxedo jacket or a boyfriend jacket with a short dress is also a fun option. The mix of the two is looking really fun. A tailored jacket in black or white over a feminine short dress of any color.
Plano Insider: Do you have any other advice you would give a young teen preparing for her prom?
Kay: First of all, as much fun as it is, go shopping by yourself without your girlfriends so you can get an idea of what you like. And never shop with your boyfriend! If he doesn’t like the way you look the night of prom, he shouldn’t be with you. You are gorgeous and it is YOUR night to shine. Pick what you like and what makes you feel great. Remember, prom is your own red carpet night and you should have fun and feel beautiful in your prom dress.
