The LV Force 14U girl’s softball team played in Allen this weekend and entered the tournament with high expectations! After winning their first tournament of the year last week they were excited to step up and compete with some of the best teams in the area last weekend.

The week started off with the bad news that one of their top pitchers, Ryan Sills was injured during the week and would not be able to play. One of their other top pitchers, Maribeth Gorsuch (Lou) was nursing an ankle injury so Force was a little short handed going into the tournament.

In their first game Lou pitched a great game and the Force defense was on fire as they as they defeated Glory-Poole 3 – 0, one of the top teams in the area!

Force then dropped a stunner to Texas Pride 97, 4-3. On final play of the game a runner attempting to score on a passed ball was being tagged out by the Force pitcher Chrissa Head but the runner failed to slide and literally fell on top of Chrissa causing the ball to squirt out of her hand.

Not to be deterred the Force came back in the afternoon game and beat the Austin Platinum 4-2 in a close game but again Lou pitched a great game and the defense held strong.

Then in the night cap Force dropped a 5-2 loss to the TFS 95. TFS was a big team who had some very big sluggers on their squad but unforced errors and some cold bats cost them a chance to enter Sunday on top of the brackets with a 3 win 1 loss record.

Sunday morning, the weather was perfect and everyone came back refreshed and ready to go. Force had done very well in the tournament so far and was looking forward to playing several more of those high dollar, high profile teams from the Dallas area.

In game one on Sunday a near disaster rocked all of us at the park. In the first inning the Force starting pitcher Maribeth Gorsuch (Lou) was struck in the head by a line drive and had to be carried off the field by the Allen Fire Department. The incident was so discerning that the Force players and the opposing players for Oklahoma Finish decide to cancel the rest of the game. “It was one of the most frightening things I have ever seen in my entire sporting career said Coach Dave Brantley.”

The Force girls were shaken and very upset from the accident. With their starting pitcher in the ER and no one knowing her condition the Force girls gathered themselves and stepped up big time. Although they dropped the last two games of the tournament they played Axe and American Freedom pretty tuff.

We are happy to report that although Maribeth Gorsuch is in quite a bit of pain she was released from the hospital on Sunday afternoon and scheduled to follow up with additional medical treatment on Monday. The initial reports indicated she suffered a ruptured disk in her neck and a concussion.

Coach Gorsuch was very proud of his team. “They gut checked it big time this weekend. Our last standing pitcher, Chrisa Head went out and competed like a champion. We were clearly in the hottest bracket in the tournament and went out there and beat two of the best this tournament had to offer on Saturday. After what happened in the first inning of our first game Sunday most teams would have packed their bags and headed for the bus.

Not Force. These girls are young and inexperienced at this level of play but I wouldn’t trade them for any of the other teams at that park this weekend. They have more class and character than any team I have ever coached against, played against or played on. They are great kids from great families. We are going to take a break, get healthy and come back ready to move forward in our development.”
