No. 1: Newman Smith football team breaks playoff drought

It had been 26 seasons since Newman Smith’s football team had played in a postseason game.

But coach Paul Ressa — who was a player on the team the last time they reached the playoffs in 1983 — and the Trojans got a taste of the playoffs after winning their last six games to finish second in District 10-4A.

But Smith was not at all satisfied with just reaching the playoffs.

The Trojans’ high-octane offense scored 56 points to blowout Sherman in the bi-district round before totaling 49 points in a 22-point win against Dallas Carter in the area round.

Smith’s dream run finally came to a close in the third round with a 28-25 loss against eventual state champion Longview.

The Lobos escaped against the Trojans as Smith missed a 47-yard game-tying field goal with less than two minutes remaining.

Smith running back Randall Joyner tied for the lead in the area in Class 4A with 24 rushing touchdowns and gained 1,462 yards for an average of 7.38 yards per carry.

Quarterback Aldo Quiroga completed 63 percent of his passes for 2,348 yards with 31 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Quiroga also gained 988 yards rushing with seven scores.

Al Lasker, meanwhile, had 52 catches for 1,247 yard (23.9 yards per catch) with 19 touchdowns.

No. 2: Hebron volleyball team dominates District 6-5A

In 2009, District 6-5A was one of the most highly regarded districts for volleyball in the state.

But the abundance of talented teams didn’t stop Hebron’s squad from ripping through district play on their way to a 9-1 mark and a district championship.

The Lady Hawks carried their success into the postseason, where the team won four matches on their way to an appearance in the regional semifinals.

Hebron won against Sachse, 3-1; Grapevine, 3-1; Plano West, 3-1 and over Coppell, 3-1, before falling against eventual state champion Amarillo, 3-0.

Hebron’s Tiffany Baker was named the district’s MVP with Karin Keeney the Coach of the Year, Nicole Hragyil the Setter of the Year and Olivia Okoro the Co-Blocker of the Year.

No. 3: Newman Smith basketball team reaches No. 1 in state, wins district title

During a portion of the 2009 season, Newman Smith’s basketball team was ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 4A according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Smith dropped just four games during the season, including going 13-1 in district to tie for a share of the 10-4A title with Highland Park.

However, Smith’s season came to a crashing halt in the bi-district round against Sherman, 64-59.

Amos Wilson was named the district’s MVP with Percy Johnson the Coach of the Year and Blake Zamudio the Co-Offensive Player of the Year.

No. 4: Lady Hawks tie for first in 6-5A

In the postseason, Hebron blanked Euless Trinity in the bi-district round, 3-0, but was bounced in the area round by Plano West, 2-1.

No. 5: Creekview hoops team takes second

Behind the play of District 9-5A Co-MVP Reggie Sonnier, Creekview’s basketball team compiled a 20-13 record on their way to tying Dallas Skyline for second place.

But the Mustangs season ended in heartbreak as the Mustangs lost in the bi-district round against Garland Lakeview Centennial, 69-68, on a buzzer-beater by Toddrick Gotcher. Creekview’s Stephen Garner had given the Mustangs a one-point advantage with five seconds remaining.

No. 6: Hebron’s hoops squads finish second

Both Hebron’s boys and girls basketball teams finished in second place in District 6-5A during the 2009 season.

The Hawks finished 6-4, tied with Coppell for second and one game behind Marcus. The Lady Hawks, meanwhile, dropped just two games while winning eight, finishing one game back of Marcus.

The season ended for the girls team with a loss to Grapevine in the bi-district round while the boys team lost by one point in the bi-district round against L.D. Bell.

No. 7: Lady Mustangs girls soccer team takes second

Propelled by a 10-game district win streak, Creekview’s girls soccer team earned second place in District 9-5A. The Lady Mustangs went 11-3 in district, finishing one game behind Lake Highlands.

The teams played a scoreless regulation and overtime period before Carrollton Christian scored off of a corner kick at the 5:05 mark to take the title.

Carrollton Christian reached the finals by defeating The Highland School Friday, 2-1, while Prince of Peace qualified by pounding Bullard Brook Hill School, 5-0.

John Seat, Dylan Gulrich, Jeremy Stanley and Josh Hall were all-tournament selections for Carrollton Christian.

No. 9: Lady Lions basketball team wins first nine games

No. 10: Swine Flu halts athletic competition

The outbreak of swine flu in Texas drastically altered sports schedules during the spring. The University Interscholastic League halted athletic competition in the state for two weeks during late April and early May, wreaking havoc on multiple sports.

The regional and state track and field meets were pushed back as a result of the delay, as were the state golf and tennis tournaments. Softball and baseball postseason games were also affected, as the swine flu caused some teams to play multiple playoff series in one week, including turning some series into a one-game elimination format.
