Groundbreaking for new senior center could happen next year

Published: Thursday, October 29, 2009 4:50 PM CDT
The architects returned to tell Little Elm senior citizens what they think they can include in the new senior center with the budget they have for designing the building.

Perkins and Will architects attended the monthly senior citizen lunch at the Little Elm Community Center last month to hear what things senior citizens wanted in the new senior center.

Perkins and Will Managing Principle Phil Callison said they must balance the quality of materials, the space available with the budget for the project.

“We're trying to balance those to make sure that at the end of the day you'll have a facility you can be proud of,” he said.

The L-shaped piece of property it will be built on will have a view of the lake and is well outside of the FEMA flood plain.

There will be several multipurpose rooms. There will also be what the architects are calling a parlor room for games, cards, and possibly a pool table. The facility will also have the capacity for computer classes and Internet.

“I think it's a good plan, but you have to have a plan for the future,” Carl Nevils of Lakewood Village said. “It should be a place for seniors to gather, a place to hang out.”

The town of Little Elm has retained Perkins and Will to build a recreation center and a senior center just off of Main Street near the old bus barn with funding from the 2009 bond and funds from the Community Development Corporation.

If all the planning stages go well, Callison said groundbreaking for the senior center could happen a year from now.

Another activity at the senior lunch was a costume contest. Jo Story won the contest dressed as an orange-haired witch.
