Friends of the library celebrate anniversary
By Penny Rathbun, Staff writer
The Friends of the Little Elm Library know how to throw a party.
Last week the group celebrated its eleventh anniversary and the library's tenth anniversary with sandwiches, cake, and ice tea.
The Little Elm Girl Scout troop served as color guard for the event and lead the audience in the Pledge of Allegiance.
“It's a joy to see people that enjoy their town so much. We want to celebrate all of the volunteers,” Friends of the Little Elm Library Nick Apel said.
Author Rosemary Rumbley was the guest speaker. One of the stories she told was about the Mighty Mites, a football team of orphans from a Masonic orphanage. The team was formed in the 1940s. They kept winning football games even though they were so poor they sometimes played in overalls and barefoot. After they beat the Highland Park High School team, the team took up a collection and bought uniforms and shoes for the Mighty Mites.
Rumbley has had a few film roles. One of them was a small role in “Paper Moon”.
“Friends can be an advocacy and support for the library,” past president Lynn Hidell said.
The Little Elm Library was originally housed in what was Little Elm High School. It was also the school library. The building is now Lakeside Junior High School.
The library moved to the new town hall the year it was built, 2003. It became the Little Elm Public Library.
Hidell said the library just got a $500 grant from Nordstrom's to be used for books for babies and toddlers. The Little Elm Friends of the library matched the grant with $1,000.
The project for the Friends is the trivia contest, scheduled for Jan. 26, 2010. It is the main fund raiser for the Friends. Teams are already forming for the event.
The Friends of the Little Elm Library always welcome new members. An individual membership is $10. For information on trivia night and membership in the Friends call Virginia Berney at 972-294-1742.
