Rowlett High School Band wins Grand Champion at Classic on the Lake

Published: Thursday, October 15, 2009 1:51 PM CDT
“Romeo and Juliet” and an old west gunfight were just two of the stories area high school bands and color guards acted out on the field at the Marching Classic on the Lake at the Little Elm Athletic Complex last Saturday.

For the third consecutive year the Little Elm High School Band and the Lobo Band Boosters hosted the event.

Two dozen bands competed in four categories. The Little Elm band was not eligible to compete because the band was hosting the event, but the Lobo musicians gave an exhibition performance before the finals.

Celina, Legacy Christian Academy, Callisburg, Grand Saline, Prairiland, Kerens, and Van Alstyne competed in the class A category, bands with 50 winds or less.

Sanger, McKinney North, Lakeview Centennial, Whitesboro, and Queen City competed in the class AA category, bands with 51 to 72 winds.

Timberview, Weatherford, North Garland, Richardson, North Lamar, Wills Point, Argyle, Liberty, Rockwall Heath, Canton, and Frisco comprised the competitors in the class AAA category, bands with 73-100 winds.

Class AAAA, bands with 101 or more winds, competitors were Sachse, Princeton, Lewisville, and Rowlett.

The Rowlett High School Band was named Grand Champion. Argyle took second place, Sachse came in third, and Rockwall Heath High School band took fourth place. Lewisville was in fifth place, Frisco took sixth place with Richardson in seventh. Liberty High School in Frisco took eighth place, McKinney North came in ninth, and Queen City was in tenth place.

Sachse took home the trophy for Outstanding Drum Majors and Frisco won an award for Outstanding Auxiliaries. Rowlett won the awards for Outstanding Percussion and Outstanding General Effect.
