Son threatens mom with gun, surrenders to Denton County Sheriff's SWAT team

The Little Elm police and the Denton County Sheriff's Department S.W.A.T. team blocked off a Little Elm neighborhood on Wednesday when a son assaulted his mother and threatened her with a gun.

Wesley Shane Cook, 38, got into an argument with his mother sometime Wednesday morning at his parents' home on Waterview Street.

Little Elm Police Sgt. Larry Denison said Cook pointed a firearm at his mother and threatened to kill her. She was able to escape to a neighbor's house and call the police.

Police blocked off the neighborhood. They were not totally certain that Cook was still in the house. They telephoned the house, but got no response from Cook.

Little Elm police called in the Denton County Sheriff's Department S.W.A.T. team. The team communicated with Cook via a loud speaker. Cook eventually surrendered himself to the team. He was arrested and taken to the Denton County Jail.

While that was going on paramedics were tending to Cook's mother in an ambulance a few blocks away from the house. She had a few bruises on her face and minor injuries. She was treated and then taken to a safe location.

Police were in contact with the mother's husband who was at a doctor's appointment in Dallas. After meeting officers at the Little Elm police department, he was taken to the safe location to join his wife.

After Cook had been gone about 45 minutes, they were allowed to return to their home.

Cook was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with a bond of $60,000. He also had a warrant for a theft out of the Dallas police department with a bond of $589.50.

“Fortunately nobody was hurt,” Denison said. “The suspect was taken into custody without injuries. It came out as well as it could come out.”

Besides the S.W.A.T. team a precinct 2 Constable from The Colony helped direct traffic. The Texas Highway Patrol and Texas Rangers were also on the scene.

“When we can come to the conclusion that that came to yesterday without anybody being injured, that's what we look for,” Denison said.
