Police attempt to keep Badge title
By Stephanie Flemmons Staff Writer
Saturday marks the fifth year the Plano police and fire departments go head-to-head during the Battle of the Badges competition.
In the departments’ fifth annual competition, participants will compete to donate the most blood and garnish the most votes during a week-long blood drive.
The department that collects the most blood will receive the coveted Battle of the Badges trophy to display at their headquarters for the entire year.
Ballots will be available at each blood donating site for citizens and police and fire officials to vote for the department of their choice. The police have proven to be the victors two years running.
“We need everyone to participate so that we can claim the trophy for the police department again this year,” Haines said.
All donors will receive a T-shirt to show their support.
Last year the departments collected 436 units of blood total. Pam Haines, police coordinator, said this year participants are shooting for 750.
Battle of the Badges originated from Plano’s five rotary clubs in an effort to increase the amount of citywide donations.
“Every year the numbers go up,” Haines said. “We added a lot of extra sites this year for individuals to donate blood.”
Donors must be at least 17-years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in good health.
The kickoff to the blood drive will be from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Plano Independence Parade in the parking lot of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church.
Carter BloodCare will be at various locations across the city on July 9-14.
