Boys soccer: McKinney shuts out Denison

Published: Wednesday, March 11, 2009 11:20 PM CDT
VcMor Eligwe scored two goals and Michael Widener and Jonathan Smith each scored one as the McKinney Lions beat Denison, 4-0, on Tuesday night.

District 17-4A leading McKinney (8-1, 19-2-2 overall) stayed a win ahead of the pack despite a frustrating night of finishing for the home team on Senior Night in the Lions? last home game of the regular season.

Smith, a senior captain, found the back of the net after the Lions had created a half-dozen scoring opportunities by the 18th minute. Smith had a skillful finish, assisted by sophomore Davis Weidow.

Adding his 24th and 25th goals of the season was Eligwe in the 30th and 60th minutes.

He was assisted by Weidow and sophomore Conrod Goulbourne.

McKinney coach Alan Pocock said senior Michael Widener skillfully finished off a cheeky backheel pass from sophomore Urim Hamiti in the 70th minute. Blanking their opponents for the 18th full game this season were defenders such as junior captain Wes Curtis, junior Michael Lieber, senior Randall Smith and sophomore Enrique Moreno with keeper Connor Davenport earning the clean sheet in goal.

"It looked like the Lions would be clinching the district championship with their senior night win, but across town, the North Bulldogs lost, 2-1, after giving up two goals in the last five minutes of the match," Pocock said. That gives "Little Elm a glimmer of hope to share the championship with the Lions on Friday, the final day of competition for District 17-4A. A win for the Lions in Sherman on Friday however would clinch a championship outright. The top four teams in the standings advance to the UIL State Playoffs beginning March 19."

In the JV match, the JV Lions remained unbeaten and unscored on in district with a 4-0 win over Denison.
