Oak Point council considers next budget
By Penny Rathbun, Staff writer
Oak Point City Council members took their first official look at the proposed fiscal year 2008-2009 city budget at a work session Monday.
The proposed budget shows total revenues of $1,937,483 and total expenditures of $1,930,412.
The City of Oak Point expects to collect at least 97 percent of property taxes which would be about $1,249,887 chunk of the revenues.
Mayor Pro Tem Jim Wohletz wanted to see a list of the duties of the finance position and city secretary before making a decision on combining them.
The council also discussed raising building fees. Null provided them with a comparative list of building fees for Oak Point, Little Elm, and Aubrey. Oak Point fees are on a par with those of the other two cities.
“Unless they are significant things, we need to be careful not to nickel and dime our citizens to death unless it means a lot of money,” Mayor Duane Olson said.
The next council budget work session is Aug. 11.
Publication of effective and rollback tax rates will happen Aug. 14. The regular council meeting is scheduled for Aug. 18.
At a council work session Aug. 25 the council is scheduled to meet with department heads to discuss department budgets and capital improvement projects.
The proposed budget is scheduled to be put on the city Web site Aug. 27. The first public hearing on the proposed budget is scheduled for Sept. 4 with a second public hearing Sept. 8.
The council is set to vote on the budget at its regular meeting Sept. 15.
