City adding multipurpose fields to Little Elm Park

Published: Thursday, June 26, 2008 12:18 AM CDT
As prices continue to swell at the pump for a single tank of gas, residents are becoming increasingly vigilant about how they spend their precious petro.

In addition to affecting family vacations and weekend jaunts to destinations around the state, rising fuel costs are forcing the city of Little Elm to rethink its athletic landscape.

Construction is now under way at Little Elm Park and will begin soon for the public swim beach along Lewisville Lake. The bulk of the remodel centers on two multipurpose soccer fields that will spring up east of the current baseball diamonds.

The fields will play home to youth soccer teams as well as flag football squads. Because Little Elm has never previously had suitable venues, the Little Elm Area Youth Sports Association has never offered soccer. That will change in the spring of 2009 once the fields are ready for use.

“We weren’t able to offer soccer and families were having to go outside of Little Elm,” said Tony Chrisman, parks and recreation director. “With the explosion of gas prices, they are looking to stay in Little Elm so they don’t have to drive to other communities.”

With a combination of funds from the 2004 bond package and the parks and recreation reserve fund, the city decided to go to work. The $2.1 million renovation will also include new concession stands, restroom facilities, pavilions and additional parking.

Johnny Broyle’s Nature Trail is also in the process of getting a makeover. Two outdoor pavilions will overlook the lake and the trail’s second phase will connect the 10-foot wide concrete loop that begins at Little Elm Park and ends at Main Street. Interconnected crushed granite hike and bike paths will be created inside the main trail.

Chrisman said the entire restoration process taking place at Little Elm Park is expected to be completed by January 2009.

The city has also taken over the junior high football field and plans to lay down new sod and spruce up the surroundings.

“We are trying to upgrade it,” Chrisman said. “It will be a lot nicer playing surface.”
